‘Harvest-to Order‘ – what’s that? We get asked this question a fair bit. And we’re glad you asked.
Essentially, it’s how we do things around here.
Most retailers operate with a ‘Harvest-to-Shelf‘ model. This means once the crop is ready, the farmer will harvest a whole bunch of it and ship it to the shops so it can sit on the shelves. Yep – unless it’s bought by you (which is usually a heap later than you’d thinkv), that produce will just sit there, hanging out like a bored kid in school, until it’s thrown out. Talk about mass food wastage!
So, you can see why we’re excited to do things a little different here at Munch Crunch Organics.
How does it work?
Harvest-to-Order means that we collect all the orders from you wonderful folks first. These orders are then sent out to our Local Network of 100% Certified Organic Farmers who harvest just the right amount of produce to abundantly fill your boxes each week. This is why our ordering cycle takes longer than a quick zip down to the shops, and why any changes to your order need to be done before the weekly window for orders closes: Wednesdays at 10pm.
So, if you know you’re going on your ‘holibobs’, pop a skip on your account the week before!
The one compromise to this model is that it does take a moment from that moment you place your order, to it arriving at your door. Which in the age of ‘fast food‘ takes a second to get used to. But, with a little bit of forward thinking, the benefits out weigh them all no doubt.
Why is this a good thing?
We’ve mentioned the major reduction in mass food waste from a Harvest-to-Order model – but we’ll mention it again, because it is a lot.
